Calculate tip, total, and per-person split
This tip calculator works out the tip amount, the total bill, and the per-person share in one place. Enter the bill amount, pick a tip percentage, and set how many people are splitting — the three result cards update instantly as you type. Everything runs locally in your browser; the numbers you enter are never sent anywhere.
For the tip percentage, tap one of the preset buttons (10%, 15%, 18%, 20%, or 25%) or type any value into the custom tip field — the two stay in sync. The per-person card divides the full total, tip included, evenly across everyone.
Say the bill is $85.50 and you tip 18%. The tip is 85.50 × 0.18 = $15.39, so the total comes to $100.89. Split between four people, each person pays $25.22. If you bump the tip to 20%, the tip becomes $17.10, the total $102.60, and the per-person share $25.65 — about 43 cents more each. Small percentage changes usually matter less per person than they look on the total.
In the US, 15-20% is standard for table service at restaurants, with 18-20% common in larger cities. For exceptional service, 25% is a generous choice. For counter service or takeout, tipping is optional and often smaller.
Etiquette guides generally say the pre-tax amount is fine, though many people tip on the full total for simplicity. If you want to tip pre-tax, enter the pre-tax subtotal in the bill field.
The calculator adds the tip to the bill first, then divides that total evenly by the number of people. It doesn't handle uneven splits — if someone ordered much more, you'll need to adjust manually.
